In this article, you're going to discover two very good stress relieving techniques I learned from two friends of mine. Stress simply isn't a problem for either of them! Even when they are confronted with very serious events, they'll be completely unruffled. They possess two crucial skills that are enormously beneficial for dealing with stress effectively and we'll look at them now.

When it comes to human beings, we have those who never enter into stressful illnesses even when confronted with serious circumstances and those who become highly-stressed over minor difficulties. This occurs because individuals who are unaffected by stress related illnesses have particular stress-busting techniques and if you acquire these techniques, you will not enter into episodes of stress, depression or anxiety. Be mindful of this while you're reading.

Andrew is someone I have known for twenty years now. Across the years, not once have I seen him suffering from stress nor have I seen him worrying about anything. He has such a relaxed and calm demeanour it is unreal. Even though he has had to deal with some very difficult circumstances, particularly caring for his sick and housebound father and having his business collapse, he carried on as if nothing had happened.

A short while ago, we were discussing things and I inquired if worrying was ever a problem that affected him. Here's his reply:

"Worry is a complete waste of time. Stuff happens, I'll deal with it then. I'm not the sort who worries over what might or might not happen, I live each day as it comes. We've all got our problems haven't we and if you worry and let things get to you, you just make it worse. Thing is, it all sorts out eventually."

If you're like I used to be, worrying about everything, then Drew's take on things may well prove to be very useful in relieving the stress for you. His words contain some real pearls, especially the second and last sentences, and hopefully they'll help you as they've helped me.

In complete contrast to Andrew is Ian. He's more of an acquaintance than a friend and I've only known him for two years but laid back he certainly isn't! The guy is assertive, oozing with confidence, streetwise with a razor sharp wit. He is undoubtedly one of a handful of people I've known in my life who sincerely couldn't care a jot if people like him or not. He will strike up conversations with complete strangers as if he's known them for years and sometimes, his "in your face" style doesn't go down well at all.

Ian has also had to cope with many difficult circumstances and during the summer, he received a terrible beating from a gang of muggers. The mugging had no affect whatsoever on his cocky attitude! I suggested that because of the way he chooses to live, there must be times when he questions his life or worries about things. In typically confident style, he said:

"You must be joking! If people don't like me then so what? If something happens it happens, so what? Occasionally I make a mistake, ah well - NEXT! Should I fall I'll dust myself off and get up again - NEXT! I don't care what happens, I don't care what people think or say about me, I live my life the way that I want to. Others have a problem with that? Bring it on, I couldn't care less - NEXT!"

While I wouldn't want to take it to such a level, the way Ian uses the word "next" is one aspect I really like. Brooding over events that happened years ago dogged me for years and when I listened to Ian's response, the focus on "next" is what I have learned the most. I recommend it to you, it will enable you to reduce stress just as it has done for me.

Both Andrew and Ian have different attitudes that stop stress arising. Take something from both of them and you have two superb stress relieving techniques to add to your stress management toolkit.
